Dad and I had some time this morning to go out and paint "plein air" (outside and on location) near his house.  It was a lovely spot in the sun with the trees and blue sky.  We had 30 degree weather this morning that's why I'm in a cap but it warmed up to the 70's.  Really beautiful day. My Dad is the one who really taught me to paint.  I always say he is really the true artist in the family.

Detail of "Judas Tree" Just finished the grass today for this painting.  It has taken several days to layer it like I wanted it but I like the life it shows all the way up to the tree trunk. I used a #0 Round Brush to do the detail.  The colors were Earth Green, Sap Green, Yellow Ochre, White and Burnt Umber.  I find that a lot of Linseed Oil helps to get those sharp edges on the grass. So this was my booth at Artscape.  It sat on one of the main entrances into the festival so I couldn't have asked for a better spot.  I had to really scramble to put some "grab ya" pieces on each outside wall so people would want to poke their heads (and eyes) in the booth.  I was tweaking until opening everyday. Three 4x12 canvases, 12x12, Oil I finished it yesterday.  I didn't like the background very much so used the scumbling method again to make it seem more at a distance and in a fog.  I like it better now.  The colors flow with each other better than before.  I used very thin washes of white/yellow/brown over the background and just kept adding layers until I felt it was done.  I worked the

Finished this 16x20 piece for a sweet friend from church today. She wanted to have Crepe Myrtles as the trees for her painting as they reminded her of her Grandparents. I finished this little 6x6 today. It is for a friend from the Philippines who lost her little baby boy. You may be wondering why there is a tree growing in some hands. Good question. Today was the reception for the opening of the PCPC Arts Festival 2010. The shows themes were: Manger, Magi and Majesty. I entered the Manger theme. Much to my delight and surprise I found that I had won one of the 20 Blue Ribbon Awards.
